Jesus - Who is
He Really?
Christians in an Age of Terrorism
We are being told
today that the war against terrorism will take more than a few years to
win - more likely it will take a decade or more. It seems that with
events like the destruction of the Twin Towers (9/11), Bali, Jakarta,
Beslam, we are in for a drawn out conflict as experienced in the 70s
when for years we struggled with the horrors of skyjackings as so
vividly remembered by the name Lockerbie. Today we face the misplaced
zeal of a small but radical and fanatical fringe element of Muslims who
justify their atrocities in the name of 'Jihad' whose activities have
become synonymous with the names 'Osama bin Laden' , 'Hambali'
and 'Jemaah
Islamiyah' among others.
This series of sermons answers
some of the tough questions that Christians and non Christians alike
have asked in times such as these. They are questions raised by God's
people in the past and within the pages of the Bible we find answers
that God has provided that remain true for us today. These answers are
for the comfort of all who struggle against evil in this world and are
anxious about the outcome of these unfolding events.

Habbakuk 3:16-19: Why
don't you do something God?
Rev. Geoff van Schie (12.09.04)

"How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not
listen? Or cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not save? Why
do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and
conflict abounds. Therefore the law is paralysed, and justice
never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice
is perverted. (Habbakuk 1:2-4) |

Christians under the Reign of Terror
When confronted by governing
authorities and other forces that work for the destruction of the
Christian Church, in the face of the tactics of overwhelming terror, the
average church member can begin to wonder whether indeed Jesus is what
He claimed to be - the Son of God and the one into whose hands God has
placed the plan to bring earth's history to its conclusion.
As I write this introduction,
this overwhelming terror exists on the doorstep of a country like
Australia where the church has felt safe for so long. In the past month
(August/September 2004) a preacher and several congregation members were
shot dead and others wounded when hooded extremists burst into their
worship service and opened fire. Such atrocities against Christians,
often by Muslim extremists, have been a part of the life of ordinary
Christians in parts of Indonesia such as Ambon and the Moluccan Islands.
Besides this Christians
continue to be persecuted for their faith in many parts of the world,
suffering imprisonment and even being put to death.
The average church member in
first century Asia Minor (modern Turkey) struggled with the
question whether Caesar was greater than Christ. The book of Revelation
was and remains God's answer to that question. In the world today where
millions of Christians are persecuted for their faith in Jesus, this
letter to the churches remains a 'must read' in the present time as
terror once again becomes a reality in the lives of God's people.
"Blessed is the one who reads the words of this
prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is
written in it, because the time is near." (Revelation 1:3, NIV)

Jesus - Who Is He Really?
Who is Jesus? Just another prophet like
Muhammed? Just another great religious man like Gautama Siddhartha or
Gautama Buddha of the Buddhist
faith?
These questions about who Jesus really is
are not new, He put them to His own followers:
"When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea
Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still
others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But
what about you?” he
asked. “Who do you say I am?”"
(Matthew 16:13-15, NIV)"
Many people today think that all religions
end up at the same 'mountain peak'. It is said they start at different
points at the base of the same mountain and though travelling by
different routes reach the same summit.
What then do we make of the following
teaching of Jesus?
“No
one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him,
and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:44, NIV)
"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father
except through me."
(John 14:6, NIV)
If Jesus' claims as to His identity are true then He is the only means
to that 'summit'. That means anyone following any other way will not
reach God. It is of the utmost importance that Jesus' claims be tested
by all who are not convinced about His identity. The book of John's
Gospel lays before any sincere and objective enquirer the facts about
Jesus. No-one can afford to ignore the teachings of
this book.
'That you May Know Jesus is the Christ and
believing be Saved'
(John 20:30-31)
